Hey! Where's Part One?

Well, it was never released for some reason...I remember always seeing it on the "upcoming releases" board at the record store but it kept getting delayed and then finally Part Two came out...

Here's the original cover of Part One...

Turns out Part One was scrapped and the material was re-woked as "Part Two" since it appears to have almost the same track listing...The album sounds like the Beastie Boys have stopped trying to make masterpieces and are now getting together just to have some fun...Think of it as the hip hop version of "It's Only Rock N; Roll..."

The band modernizes their sound somewhat; the beats pound a bit more, the synths are dirtier, and the whole thing has a more claustrophobic, blown-out sound....

A few new classics do appear...Their collaboration with Nas in "Too Many Rappers," is excellent...Turns out he's a good fit. His cool-headed verses offset the relatively manic delivery of the Beasties...I also like the new wave/rap hybrids "OK" and "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" (the latter track features some Gewn Stafani clone that amazingly doesn't destroy the song!) ....I wish they would have had more time to develop this form...

I'm also happy to report that hardcore punk once again makes an appearance on "Lee Majors Come Again" albeit in a slightly different form than we're used to....It's not as organic, but it does still deliver the visceral thrill (and it's probably the catchiest thing on the record for me). ... Still, it's  exciting to hear them doing hardcore again since the form was completely absent on "To the 5 Boroughs.

Unfortunately, due to the recent passing of MCA, this is probably the final Beastie Boys album...I can't imagine them replacing him...Although, it would be cool to see Mike D and Ad-Rock work together again...Either way, the group had a great run and accomplished a lot in their time...."Paul's Boutique" alone would have cemented their place in rock history, but the Beasties never settled...they seemed to be in constant search for new and exciting sounds and in the process they opened people's minds to the true wonders of hip hop..The  world of music is a  much richer (and enjoyable ) place for having them...

To say goodbye to the Beastie Boys we're going to make a Brass Monkey in their honor...

...but wait! In my quest to discover what the Brass Monkey was, I came across a couple different answers...So let's determine which is the actual Brass Monkey the Beastie Boys were talking about...

Earth 1 Brass Monkey:

One Part Dark Rum
One Part Vodka
One Part Orange Juice

An excellent variation on the classic Screwdriver...The Beastie Boys' claim that the Brass Monkey tasted best with lemon popsicles...That would make perfect sense with this particular drink.  But this seems a little high-class, doesn't it? So maybe they were talking about ...

Earth 2 Brass Monkey:

Drink an Olde English 40 down to the top of the label.
Fill the rest with Orange Juice.

I drank two of these and it felt like I swallowed a brick the next morning...It tasted fine, and drinking this goes great with any rap record, but the thought of putting a popsicle in it doesn't sound that appetizing. but a closer listen to the lyrics of "Brass Monkey" reveals:

"I'll down a '40 dog" in a single gulp..."

and...

"M.C.A. with the bottle,
D. rocks the can..."

Therefore the answer must be Earth 2 Brass Monkey...

Alright,  set aside 30 minutes, sip your Earth 2 Brass Monkey and check out the most epic video ever... "Fight for Your Right Revisited." Enjoy...
