Battlestar Galactica: The Saga of Battlestar Galactica

1979

MCA Reocrds

Format I Own it on: Vinyl

Track Listing: 1. The Saga of Battlestar Galactica

Whoops! I should have covered this one earlier, since alphabetically speaking, it starts with "BA" and I'm currently in the "BE's." I must have put it  in the wrong spot last time I listened to it...Oh well...I also realized I have a whole stack of Buju Banton CD's  in the "BU" section, that should have come earlier...

Anyway, this album is an audio drama version of the pilot episode of the original Battlestar Galactica  television series. It's narrated by the always awesome Lorne Greene...You can practically hear the cape in his performance...

I was only about 3 years old when this show originally aired, but I could always recall it with almost perfect clarity...I mean, I've since re-watched it on DVD and television reruns, but even without those I'm sure I would have remembered it... The  show left an indelible image in my mind, probably thanks to the Cylons...

..and the Daggit ...

(which I tried to figure out for years how it was done...It didn't appear to be the standard midget in a suit...Turns out it was a chimp in a suit...huh...)

...and oh yea...Templeton Peck was on this show too! There was even a bit of a crossover later on the A-Team...

Anyway, I've had a longtime passion for this show...To be honest I've never even seen the new series...I've heard that it doesn't even really have monsters, spaceship battles and robots...Well, I'm not particularly interested then...

But wait...What about the gripping human drama?

Yea. Especially, not interested... I like robots and monsters, dammit!  And I bet the later series never had alien disco...

 Beat that "meaningful interpersonal interactions!"

Like I said, it's an audio version of the first episode that sets up the whole premise of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind and their battle with the evil alien race, the Cylons.  This is where the Colonies begin their endless quest for the lost 13th Colony...Which turns out to be (spoiler alert!)  Planet Earth...

Well, I guess it wasn't an endless quest...They eventually find it in the year 1980...So I guess it only took them a year or so...

(By the way...Galactica 1980 gets a lot of shit, but watch it anyway! It's so awesome! There's an episode where they fight Nazis! And one where the Cylons hang out with Wolfman Jack! And the episode where Templeton Peck is stranded on a deserted planet with a Cylon is the greatest episode of TV in history! I'm not joking!)

I bought this record at FYE where the beautiful, bright gate-fold cover caught my eye immediately! I mean look at it! This is true art! It should be on display in the Guggenheim!

There's really no reason for albums like this to be made anymore...Back in '79 there were no DVD's or a youtube.com to watch reruns on...So if you really loved an episode of a show and you desperately wanted to see it again you were just shit out of luck, unless it was in syndication or something...But with records like this you, could relive the first episode of Battlestar Galactica over and over on your turntable..I love this concept and I particularly love the presentation!

For this special occasion, I dug out my pile of old 1970's Battlestar Galactica comic books and scanned in a couple of my favorite covers and pages...

This is  the sweet cover of the first issue...

This is the cover for the third issue...I like this one too, cos it has the Cylon, the Daggit, and the bug-drone guy...

Do you ever look at old ads and wish they were still valid? That's how I feel about this...At $4.99 a pop, I'll take ten!

I can't tell which poster I want the most...The Kiss one is cool, but it's hard to pass up the Coneheads...The text is pretty small but I can see in the list of posters "Not Shown" they're offering a "Grizzly Adams" poster...Okay, we have a winner...

I like this page cos it has the "Space Casino" scene,,,Which I think was their take on the famous Star Wars "Cantina" scene...In the bottom right panel you can see the cool and creepy disco singers with the extra mouths and eyes...

The cover of Issue 14....I posted this one just because it's by Walt Simonson....Whom I love...

This is an ad for Star Trek and Black Hole toys...I loved the Black Hole movie! Which reminds me...I think somewhere in my closet I have an old Black Hole children's book...If you guys are good, maybe I'll see if I can dig that up and post some scans of it tomorrow...By the way, on the Star Trek side of the page there's an alien head on the far left that looks like the bottom of a wiener...You can see it  right about where Scotty's feet would be...Just thought you should know about that...Wait.. I just noticed it gives his name on the top...Zaranite...

This is what he looks like in the movie apparently...

 He's kind of cool, actually....
Here's the Zaranite action figure...

Okay, enough about Star Trek, I'll save all that until i get to my Star Trek record...

Since it's not already on youtube and I don't particularly feel like converting the vinyl and uploading it there, I'm just going to post the theme song..Which does appear on the record...Enjoy...
